Guitar, violin, piano, theory, jazz, mandolin
Jacob deGroot-Maggetti's face is a familiar one in the music community around Kitchener-Waterloo. He is a member of Fiddle and Swing, and can frequently be seen busking with the group at the Kitchener Market on violin and mandolin. He plays upright bass in the house band at Hep Cats Swing Dance Studio, where he also leads weekly jazz jam sessions. He is the Music Director at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kitchener, has been Assistant Conductor for the UW University Choir, and has led two chamber choirs.
He recently completed a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Waterloo where he studied violin with Lance Ouellette, receiving an Honours degree with Distinction in Music and an award for Distinguished Academic Achievement. Over the course of his degree, Jacob studied and performed a wide variety of music: He has sung in multiple choirs, played both guitar and electric bass in the university's jazz band, and has years of experience playing in the school's Balinese Gamelan Ensemble.
Jacob's taste in music is eclectic: he enjoys creating music in genres ranging from fiddle to jazz, from folk to classical, and from blues to bluegrass. He has performed at the Centre in the Square, the University of Waterloo's Humanities Theatre, Wilfrid Laurier University's Maureen Forrester Recital Hall, the KW Jazz Room, the Uptown Waterloo Jazz Festival, the Kultrun World Music Festival, and the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts.
